Biggest cold storage warehouse opens in Tibet to ISO22000 standard
THE largest cold storage warehouse equipped with the most advanced facilities has become operational in Tibet's capital Lhasa to secure stable supply of meat for Tibet, Xinhua reports.
The cold storage warehouse has a capacity of 40,000 tonnes when fully completed. It has adopted the ISO22000 food safety management system. The first phase can store up to 20,000 tonnes with 5,000 tonnes for halal food. The second phase, which begins construction next year, is expected to be completed in 2014.
Tibetan tourism has been in rapid development during recent years and has boosted demand for food, especially meat. According to Zhu Qingyong, person in charge of the cold warehouse project, said that Tibet's import of meet from other regions is growing at a rate of more than 10 per cent, and that the warehouse can help to maintain steady supply of meat and prevent fluctuation of its price while reducing logistics cost.
