Dar es Salaam terminal boasts of record performance in crane moves
THE Tanzania International Container Terminal Services Limited (TICTS) has announced a productivity record of 36,500 TEU for the previous month, reports the Tanzania Daily News.
This represents an increase of 11 per cent since June and marking the highest level attained in container handling yet achieved at the terminal, the company said in a statement issued in Dar es Salaam.
The statement said the rise in performance is attributed to TICTS' new panamax ship-to-shore gantry crane (SSG) which was commissioned in September and became fully operational last month.
"TICTS is also able to handle more cargo volume due to the extension of the quay rail to berth eight to allow all five SSGs to operate on all berths. TICTS is capable of accommodating three vessels simultaneously," the statement added.
The company has said that the Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) has played a pivotal role in making TICTS' success. "We need to thank the TPA for making the Dar es Salaam Port a gateway of trade for Eastern, Central and Southern Africa," said TPA.
