New York restricts harbour to essential personnel, no electricity yet
THE Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) has advised port users that there is no electrical power and no time frame for repairs. Navigation channels remained closed and roads covered with debris, rail lines compromised and fencing in widespread disrepair.
"Port Authority staff is working to clear roads and is communicating with the container terminal operators and major tenants to coordinate the clean up and reinstatement of service," said a statement from the authority.
"Only select essential personnel are permitted on port at this time. All non-essential personnel will be denied access by PAPD at port entrances," the PANYNJ statement said.
Port authority staff and engineers are on site at all facilities to inspect conditions and assess damage, it said.
"Our primary goal is to ensure the safety of our workers and those who use our facilities. We will resume operations at our facilities as early as possible, but only when it is safe to do so," PANYNJ said.
