Cochin calls for more supervision on using accident-prone pilot ladders
PILOT ladder failure, including the rigging, on ships calling at Cochin Port in India is increasing concerns that it may result in accidents.
Masters of all ships are being reminded of the need to ensure that pilot boarding arrangements ought to be in compliance with SOLAS Chapter V/23 and IMO resolution A 1045 (27) for embarking and disembarking pilots, reports GAC Hot Port News.
In addition, the rigging of the pilot ladder and other appliances, as well as the embarkation and disembarkation of the pilot must be supervised by a responsible officer on board the ship.
Improper rigging or any failure of the pilot ladder is "unacceptable and would result in cancellation of the movement and other penal provisions as per rules", according to the Cochin Port Trust.
