NYK president meets captains, engineers in annual safety campaign
JAPAN'S NYK Line has again concluded its annual fleet safety and environmental management campaign with activities that included visits from executives to deepen communication between crew and onshore staff, conducting an exchange of views on safe ship operations.
Company president Yasumi Kudo and executive officers also met with six captains and chief engineers at the NYK headquarters in Tokyo, and discussed safe operations, fuel savings and seafarer training.
NYK also invited speakers to participate in a crisis-response lecture, and separately held a mock press conference to help practice a quick response to a serious accident.
The annual "Remember Naka-no-Se Safety Campaign" started in an effort to learn from the mistakes that led to an oil spill from an NYK tanker when it went aground at Naka-no-Se in Tokyo Bay in 1997.
Every year since, top management and other staff visit NYK ships to ensure the implementation of safe ship operations.
The company's environmental management committee, which oversees the safe operation of the NYK fleet, held a meeting to hear from captains and chief engineers to encourage the implementation of practical, workable activities.
