MSC extends Swedish coverage with weekly call at Stockholm October 1
GENEVA's Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) will introduce weekly services to Stockholm effective from October 1 at the container terminal Frihamnen.
Its coverage now includes ports: Antwerp, Bremerhaven, Sodertalje, Gavle and Norrkoping. Another goes loop calls at Gothenburg and Helsingborg.
It is hoped that Stockholm's new rail shuttle service run by TM Rail between the deep-sea port and Stockholm (Arsta) will support expansion given the port's 18 per cent capacity increase since 2010. Port volumes, however, remain small at 27,843 TEU.
Hutchison Ports Sweden, needs to attract customers for its Stockholm's Frihamnen container terminal and in addition a 500,000 TEU terminal at nearby Norvikudden in Nynashamn, which it holds as a concession and awaits environmental approval before construction can begin.
