Canada fines Korean Air US$5.4 million for role in cargo price-fixing

KOREAN AIR has been fined C$5.5 million (US$5.4 million) by Canada's anti-trust Competition Bureau for its part in a price-fixing cartel between 2002 and 2006.

So far the regulator has fined Cargolux C$2.5 million for its involvement in fixing of fuel surcharges for international cargo services from Canada after a guilty plea.

Air France-KLM, Martinair, Qantas and British Airways have also pleaded guilty to the charges, said the Competition Bureau, which levied fines of C$22.6 million after seven convictions.

The European Commission has also fined 11 airlines US$1.1 billion for price-fixing, mainly fuel surcharges and the US Justice Department has levied $1.6 million in fines.
