Transnet's Ngqura South African terminal ready for Liebherr cranes
TRANSNET Port Terminal's (TPT) is ready to operate two Liebherr super postpanamax cranes for its Ngqura Container Terminal adding to a total of eight ship-to-shore cranes delivered in January for ZAR150 million (US$18.43 million).
The addition of the cranes following testing will enhance Ship Working Hours (SWH) quota in order to meet increased demand forecast, said terminal executive Siya Mhlaluka.
According to a report from Port Technology International, Transnet aims to invest ZAR300 billion on freight infrastructure in the next seven years of which ZAR33 billion is allocated to port operations.
The Phase 2 A expansion is underway to increase capacity at Ngqura Container Terminal to 1.5 million TEU by 2013/2014 with Phase 2 B to double annual capacity between 2015 and 2019 at cost of ZAR808 million.
