Container homes too low-rent for Fort Worth councillors
DESPITE the low cost of homes built from shipping containers, Forth Worth city council opposes them as "not suitable for a single family, being simply a container with two windows and a door.
"I don't think these are appropriate for single-family neighbourhoods," said Councillor Kathleen Hicks, who was seconded by Mayor Mike Moncrief, who said: "It's not going to attract anything except problems."
The FEU homes include a kitchen, bathroom and two windows. A prototype looked a lot like a green shipping container with a roof, said a UPI report.
The plan is proposed by the non-profit group A Place to Sleep, reported the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. Project director Mike Wallace says the homes planned for Fort Worth will be designed to fit into the neighbourhood where they are located.
Fort Worth Council has instructed civil servants to alter zoning ordinances to "discourage" the development of container housing.
