STX Shipbuilding Begins Construction of 13,000-TEU Containership
STX Shipbuilding Co., the world’s No.4 shipbuilder, started a full-fledged construction of 13,000-TEU containership in its Jinhae shipyard. It is for the first time that STX Shipbuilding embarked on a large-scale containership construction. This containership is one of total 9 vessels of 13,000-TEU containerships ordered from Greek ship owner in August 2007 at $1.5 billion.
The containership, 365.8m in length, 48.4m in width, and 29.9m in height, scales larger than the combined area of three football fields -- the launch and delivery of the containership is respectively scheduled for November this year and early next year. The remaining 8 vessels are to be procedurally delivered from 2010 to 2011.
These containerships are capable of running at a maximum speed of 25.2 knots an hour, and equipped with optimal container loading capacity.
Taking the opportunity of the recent large-scale containership construction, STX Shipbuilding plans to gear up its efforts in building high added-value vessels suited for its status of the world’s ‘Big 4’ shipbuilders. STX Shipbuilding is actively advancing into the overseas market upon succeeding in developing a 22,000-TEU containership last May for the first time in the world.
