Shipbuilders Council of America (SCA), today applauded the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration (MARAD), U.S. Transportation Secretary, Elaine L. Chao, and MARAD Administrator Mark Buzby, for awarding $9.8 million in federal grants to support capital improvements and employee training projects at small shipyards across the United States.
“The U.S. shipbuilding and repair industry has created more than 400,000 family-waged jobs from coast to coast and contributes $25.1 billion in labor income and $37.3 billion in U.S. GDP. These grants will help build and grow one of America’s most innovative legacy industries,” said Matthew Paxton, president of SCA.
The grants, provided through the Small Shipyard Grant Program, help eligible shipyards modernize operations, improve efficiency and reap the benefits of increased productivity by investing in emerging technologies and a highly skilled workforce.
