Novatek’s Kola Shipyard project broadens horizons

Construction is now underway of the shipyard expected to be key to the development of Arctic LNG-2, the second liquefied gas plant in the Arctic developed by Novatek. The gas producer signed a memorandum of understanding with the Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Murmansk Region Government in June, to build a 150-hectare site employing up to 6,500 people at Belokamenka on the Kola Peninsula, creating a centre for Russia’s offshore structures construction needs.

“With the construction of the Kola Yard, we plan to meet the challenge of maximising the localisation of LNG plant production, based on gravity-based structures, ready for producing LNG,” said Novatek Chairman, Leonid Michelson.
Novatek is considering how overseas partners could be useful in providing management support at the Kola Shipyard, with reports emerging that interested parties include Italy’s Saipem.

Russian energy counterpart Rosneft has already reached two significant agreements with international interests that support the development of the Zvezda shipbuilding complex at Bolshoy Kamen in the Russian Far East. Together with Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries Co. Ltd. (HSHI), Rosneft has formed Zvezda-Hyundai to facilitate Hyundai Samho’s providing design and construction support to build Aframax type tankers, including those capable of running on LNG.

In a separate deal with France’s Gaztransport & Technigaz (GTT), Zvezda Shipyard has signed an agreement covering the design and manufacture of cargo containment systems for LNG carriers which, according to Rosneft, “envisages development of liquefied gas-carrier building technologies unique for the Russian Federation”.
