HHI Builds Largest Virtual Simulation Center in the Industry

Hyundai Heavy Industries built the largest virtual simulation-based verification facility in the industry.

Hyundai Heavy Industries recently announced the opening of the Hardware-in-the-Loop Simulation (HILS) Center for virtual simulation-based verification at the headquarters in Ulsan City with the participation of chairman Choi Gil-sun and president Kang Hwan-ku among others. HILS is a technology that diagnoses and verifies design errors and malfunctions by simulating complex systems mounted on ships, offshore plants, automobiles, aircraft, spacecraft, etc. in various virtual environments.

The HILS Center, built on a floor of 215 square meters inside General Research Building at Hyundai Heavy Industries’ headquarters, is equipped with nine kinds of HILS equipment in three areas — shipbuilding, offshore plants and engines.

The shipbuilding division has four kinds of HILS equipment, including dynamic positioning (DP) HILS, which controls the positions of special vessels such as drillships, and power management system (PMS) HILS. The offshore division has three kinds of equipment including a subsea simulator, which predicts the operation performance of offshore plants and verifies control systems. The engine division has two kinds of equipment –- a HILS system to diagnose the conditions of “Himsen Engine” developed by Hyundai Heavy Industries and a driver training system.
