Workshop aims at attaining self-reliance in shipbuilding
The shipbuilding industry offered tremendous business potential as the country not only has a vast coastline but the inland waterways were also being spruced up by the government in an effort to develop transportation of finished goods, said R. Rajamanohar, General Manager, Planning and Development, Central Planning Group and NPCIL Production, BHEL, Tiruchi.
Inaugurating a two-day workshop on ‘Welding in Shipbuilding industry’ at the Welding Research Institute (WRI) of BHEL, Tiruchi, on Tuesday, Mr.Rajamanohar said WRI was ready to implement the processes developed in-house in shipbuilding industry.
The technology partnership between WRI and the National Institute for Research and Development in Shipbuilding (NIRDESH) would help in knowledge sharing across the shipbuilding industry, he said.
Capt.Ramesh Babu, Project Director, NIRDESH, Kozhikode, outlined the challenges the shipbuilding industry in India had to deal with, especially in welding of different composition of materials used for the hulls and upper decks. Collaborative efforts with the WRI would help find solutions for the large number of problems in the field.
R.Easwaran, General Manager, WRI and Labs, BHEL, Tiruchi, said the workshop aimed at attaining self-reliance in shipbuilding by bringing together leaders in the industry and share latest developments in the field.
The participants would also get to see the latest developments and facilities in welding technology and processes available with WRI. The workshop is being attended by over 30 delegates from nine shipyards including Cochin Shipyard, Goa Shipyard, Naval Dock Yard, Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd, Hindustan Shipyard Limited, Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited, Shoft Shipyard Private Ltd, Indian Oil Corporation Limited and Larsen and Toubro, according to a BHEL press release. G.Ravichandran and R.Subbarayalu, Additional General Managers, and N.Raju, Senior Deputy General Manager, spoke.
