Shipbuilders Council Announces 2016 Shipyard Safety Awards Shipyard Safety Records Lead Industry

The Shipbuilders Council of America (SCA) last week announced the recipients of its annual safety awards. SCA’s safety awards enhance operations and promote safety through recognition and promotion of accident prevention. Through their proactive approaches and dedication to improved safety and health of their employees, the 12 member companies who received awards demonstrated the commitment to employee safety in the shipyard industry.

SCA member companies are eligible for both the Excellence and Improvement in Safety Awards if they submit the SCA Injury & Illness survey for all four quarters, have zero fatalities throughout the year and if their recordable incidence rate (TRIR) is below the SCA aggregate – 4.59 percent or if they reduce their year-on-year TRIR by 10 percent or more.

SCA recently announced an Alliance Program with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), a part of the Department of Labor (DOL), focused on continuing the industry-leading employee safety practices in U.S. shipyards. The Alliance Program will develop training and best practices to promote safety and health in the shipbuilding and repair industry.

“In a shipyard environment, with complex machinery and systems, safety is paramount,” said Matthew Paxton, President of the SCA. “The awards SCA presents recognize the stellar safety performance of the leadership of these shipyards and their commitment to safety is proven in the data. We are thrilled to recognize these companies and the hard-working men and women who reflect the shipyard industry’s culture of safety year after year.”
