Indonesia: Shipbuilding, Repair Industry To Generate RM6.35 Billion In GNI
The Shipbuilding and Ship Repair (SBSR) industry in Malaysia is expected to generate RM6.35 billion in Gross National Income (GNI) and provide 55,000 employment opportunities by 2020.
In 2013, the industry generated a turnover of about RM8.35 billion and provided about 32,500 jobs.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Mah Siew Keong said the industry is gaining traction as a new growth area and the government is fully committed to positioning Malaysia as a key global maritime player by 2020.
“The SBSR industry needs to be resilient and continuously enhance their competitiveness,” he told reporters at the Asia Marine and Offshore Exhibition (AMOX’15), here Thursday.
Mah also witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the Malaysian Industry-Government Group for High Technology (MIGHT) and Global Shipbuilding and Offshore Engineering (GSOE).
Human capital development is outlined as part of the MoU where manpower, consulting services for project and engineering management and training are emphasised.
Mah lauded the partnership as it aims to improve the country’s shipyard productivity through fabrication management and engineering services.
“This will then provide us with more engineering and technological knowledge for the SBSR industry to grow.
“Currently, Malaysia’s exports of ships and boats are worth more than RM1.0 billion,” he said, adding, the partnership was also timely for Malaysia’s SBSR industry to prepare itself for the globalised market in future.
