Namibia: Ship Repair Company Looking to Conquer Africa

EBH Namibia, the ship repair company based at Walvis Bay, is looking to expand its services to the larger African market, given that few countries on the west coast of Africa offer repair services.

The company has just launched its new Panamax size third dock at the coast.

“In terms of our future strategic plans, we are pursuing the expansion of our footprint outside Namibia, including to the north of Namibia along the west coast of Africa,” the company said in response to questions following the launch of the third dock.

EBH Namibia was established in 2007. The Namibian government, via Namport, is the majority shareholder while the South African DCD Group is the minority shareholder.

The company says it offers holistic service solutions in all aspects of marine engineering and ship repair to the local and international shipping and offshore industry.

The company operates three privately-owned floating docks in Walvis Bay, including the new Panamax-sized dock.

The company has a docking capacity of 29 500 tonnes.

“We are targeting the trans-Atlantic shipping trade along the west coast of Africa. We would also be targeting chemical and oil tankers,” the company said. It also services a number of vessels operating off, or trans-Atlantic vessels travelling past the west coast of Africa.

By its estimates, the company claims its downstream impact on the economy, since inception, is in the region of N$5 billion. In addition, the company procures annually an estimated N$400 million in services and materials.

“There are no privately-owned companies providing this service. In the common-user facility we have the Namport syncrolift with a capacity of 2 000 tonnes,” it said.
