Contract for two more icebreakers

Havyard Ship Technology AS has signed a contract with an international shipping company for the design and building of two more Havyard 843 Ice offshore icebreakers

In November 2013, Havyard Ship Technology signed a contract for building of one Havyard 843 Ice icebreaking offshore vessel. An international shipping company has now ordered two vessels of the same type with some minor design changes. The contract for the second vessel is signed with a minor subject to be lifted by Havyard. The ships are designed by Havyard Design & Solutions in Fosnavåg and will be built at Havyard Ship Technology’s shipyard in Leirvik in Sogn. The ships, which will be assigned the newbuild numbers 128 and 129, are scheduled for delivery in the fourth quarter 2016. The contracts for the two vessels are worth just over NOK 1 billion in total.

Icebreaker experts
Havyard Ship Technology’s yard in Leirvik in Sogn is one of the shipyards that has built most icebreaking offshore vessels in the world. Since 1995, the yard has delivered seven offshore icebreakers, in addition to the three that are currently on order. That is a third of all the icebreakers of this type that DnV has classified worldwide. The last two vessels, which were delivered in 2006, were built for Russian shipping companies.
Kenneth Pettersen, Executive Vice President of the Havyard Ship Technology business area, says that good references mean a lot when talking with customers who are looking for offshore icebreakers.
‘All types of vessels have their special characteristics and challenges,’ Pettersen says. ‘The fact that we have already built so many vessels of this type means that the customer can rest assured that we know what we are doing and that they will get what they expect. If we are to succeed in delivering good ships, we need to have good control of both the design and the building process, at the same time as we cooperate well with the shipowners throughout the project,’ says Kenneth Pettersen.

Great opportunities
Havyard has been working with owners operating in Arctic areas for many years and it strongly believes that even more business opportunities will open up there in future.
‘When we signed contract last year, we had great expectations of the market in the Arctic, and the new contracts show that our strategy has been the correct one,’ says Tor Leif Mongstad, Executive Vice President Sales. ‘Our expertise and technology are attractive for shipping companies operating in these regions, and we have developed a product that puts us in a very good position to compete for new and upcoming projects. We have other icebreaker designs in our portfolio in addition to the Havyard 843 Ice design, and we can quickly adapt our designs to customer needs. We strongly believe that we will see more such contracts going forward,’ says Tor Leif Mongstad.

Excellent order book
With this order, Havyard Group now has nine newbuilds on order at the yard in Leirvik in Sogn, and the shipbuilding business area has orders on its books worth just under NOK 3 billion. As is the case for the other vessels built at the shipyard, it is Havyard Design & Solutions that delivers the design and detailed engineering for production of the ship. In addition, Havyard Power & Systems, which is based in Ålesund, will deliver the electrical engineering, automation and alarm systems and Havyard Concept Bridge. Norwegian Electric Systems, where Havyard owns just under 40% of the shares, will deliver electric motors, generators and electrical switchboards. The contract will also have ripple effects in the maritime cluster in Western Norway in the form of deliveries of equipment and services to the yard during the building of the ship.
In addition to the design for the building of the ship at Havyard’s own yard, Havyard Design & Solutions also has orders for the delivery of design and equipment packages for the building of ships of Havyard designTM in Brazil, Spain, Singapore, India and China. Since 2005, 78 vessels of Havyard designTM have been built or are under construction.

Havyard 843 Ice
The Havyard 843 Ice design has been developed by the Herøy-based design company Havyard Design & Solutions in connection with the contract that was signed last year. The ships will have the DnV ice class Icebreaker Ice 10 and Winterized Cold (-30 °C). Among other things, this means that the ship can break ice that is more than one metre thick and that it has a system to prevent icing of the ship. The ship is otherwise designed for anchor-handling, towing and for use in emergency response operations in connection with oil spills and rescue services. The last two ships also have bigger winches, SPS classification, more accommodation and are prepared for the installation of an offshore crane.
