Cochin Shipyard Launches New Buoy Tender Vessel

The Cochin Shipyard Ltd (CSL) on Saturday launched a buoy tender vessel, being built for the Director General of Lighthouses and Lightships. The ship was launched by Mona Trivedi, wife of Shipping secretary Vishwapati Trivedi.

The vessel has been named ‘Indira Point’, in honour and memory of the 20 officials of the Department of Lighthouses and Lightships who lost their lives in the 2004 tsunami.

CSL chairman and managing director Commodore K Subramaniam, Cochin Port Trust chairman Paul Antony, Director General of Lighthouses and Lightships Captain A K Surej, Shipping Corporation of India director Captain Devdas, other dignitaries, officials and employees of the CSL were present at the function. Indira Point is a specialised multi-purpose ship designed for transportation and placement of buoys at deep seas/recovery and maintenance of buoys/towing and mooring of light vessels/distress management/transportation of equipment and materials for repair of lighthouses situated on remote islands. The vessel is ‘Rolls Royce Marine UT-755S design’, and is being built under the classification requirements of the Indian Register of Shipping.

The contract for the construction of the ship was signed in August 2012, and the delivery date is June 10, 2015. The company said it is confident of delivering the vessel ahead of schedule. At present, the CSL has orders for 12 ‘fast patrol vessels’ and one aircraft carrier for the Indian Navy, apart from the buoy tender vessel. In the year 2013-14, the CSL posted excellent results.
