WE Tech receives order for delivery of Direct Drive Permanent Magnet Shaft Generator solutions

In January 2014, WE Tech Solutions Oy and Tianjin Xingang Shipbuilding Heavy Industry Co., Ltd. in China signed a contract for the delivery of four Direct Drive Permanent Magnet Shaft Generator solutions for a newbuilding vessel series recently ordered by Wallenius Lines. Tianjin Xingang shipyard is part of China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (CSIC), the state-owned northern shipyard group in China. Wallenius Lines is a privately owned Swedish shipping company, specialising in transporting cars and trucks worldwide.

WE Tech is a leading energy efficiency solution provider for the shipping industry. The company, based in Vaasa, Finland, is to deliver its Direct Drive Permanent Magnet Shaft Generator solution to a series of four Post-Panamax sized Pure-Car-Truck-Carrier (PCTC) vessels ordered by Wallenius Lines. Each 200 m long and 36.5 m wide vessel will have a cargo capacity equivalent to 8000 cars. The vessel will be built at Tianjin Xingang shipyard in northern China.  Contract signing took place on January 28, 2014 and equipment delivery will commence in November 2014.

Wallenius Lines continuously strive to have the most energy efficient machinery available in their ships and with WE Tech’s WE DriveTM and the Direct Drive Permanent Magnet Shaft Generator technology the energy efficiency levels of the machinery reach unprecedented levels in the marine industry. With its active front-end low harmonic drive technology, the WE DriveTM allows the shaft generator to operate over the full main engine speed range while generating electricity for the vessels electrical network with high efficiency over the entire range. This feature is particularly prominent in electrical part loads – the normal electrical load condition in any ship.

With the WE DriveTM and Direct Drive Permanent Magnet Shaft Generator in Power Take Out (PTO) mode, the available power for the vessel’s electrical network is up to 1.5 MW, generated by a fuel efficient 2-stroke main engine In this mode the auxiliary generators are not running. As the operating hours of the auxiliary generators thus are drastically reduced, significant savings are achieved. Reduced running hours also reduce the need for maintenance.

In Power Take In (PTI) mode, the WE DriveTM converts auxiliary generator power to propulsion power by employing the Direct Drive Permanent Magnet Shaft Generator as a motor. By utilising the PTI feature in this Boost Mode, the WE DriveTM can provide  boost power of up to 1 MW directly to the propeller shaft, supporting the main engine when required, thus enabling low-load optimisation of the main engine.
