Annual orders for S. Korean ships nearly double last year
Orders won by South Korean shipbuilders increased nearly twofold in 2013 from the previous year, beating their Chinese rivals in terms of value, data showed.
According to the data compiled by market researcher Clarkson Research Services, South Korean shipyards reaped orders of 16.07 million compensated gross tons (CGTs) last year, up 99 percent from 8.08 million CGTs in 2012.
The figure is 33 percent of overall global vessel orders of 48.66 CGTs placed last year. The global orders were up 92.4 percent from a year ago.
South Korea ranked second in the share of the global orders, after China's 40.9 percent, but upped Japan, which took up 14.8 percent.
By value, South Korean shipbuilders ranked first with US$41.1 billion, beating their main rival Chinese shipbuilders whose total orders amounted to $32.7 billion.
The positive performance by local shipbuilders stemmed from their orders of expensive ships such as liquefied natural gas (LNG) and container carriers.
The Clarkson ship price index, which tracks the average value of ordered vessel types, has been on the rise, recording 133 in December, the highest since May 2012.
