Shiplift facility boosts GSL's ship repair business

The commissioning of the state-of-the-art shiplift facility in Goa Shipyard Ltd (GSL) has given a boost to its ship repair and shipbuilding activities. The yard has seen docking of 50 vessels since its commissioning on May 2011. Speaking on the occasion of the 50{+t}{+h} docking on October 22, GSL's chairman and managing director RAdm(Retd) Vineet Bakhshi said, "There was an upsurge in the ship repair activities in the yard and the company has repaired 49 vessels to date which include naval and coastguard offshore patrol vessels, offshore supply vessels, AHTS, fishing research vessels, diving support vessels, bulk carriers, barges, yachts, etc." He further said the ship repair business is expected to increase further in the years to come. The state-of-the-art shiplift system with dimensions of 120m x 25m is capable of docking 120m-long vessels up to 6,000 tonnes. The ship transfer system spread over an area of around 13,600 sqm can transfer vessels of 6,000 tonnes capacity from the shiplift to hard stand. GSL has the capacity to dock four ships of 120m length simultaneously on hard stand at present, which can meet the customer demands for dock in emergency repairs.

GMC holds CME programme in haematology: The Goa Medical College (GMC) recently organized a continuing medical education (CME) programme in haematology at its premises. The faculty was Dr Vijay Ramanan - director and head of clinical haematology department and bone marrow transplant unit, Ruby Hall Clinic, Pune, and director of Yashoda Haematology Clinic, Pune. The CME was chaired by Dr R G Wiseman Pinto and Dr Savita Chandra. The topics covered were 'best approach towards a complete haemogram report'. The CME programme was well attended by the doctors and Goa Medical Council gave it a CME accreditation.

Programme in memory of F X D'Souza: A week-long programme was held to observe the 13th death anniversary of well known football referee late F X D'souza. With the help of doctors from Goa Dental College, Bambolim, two dental camps were organized at the Government primary school and Our Lady of Merces High School in Merces. An eye camp and oral hygiene camp was also held at the Government High School, Cumbharjua. Lunch and dinner was offered to the inmates of National Association of Blind, St Cruz, and lunch to inmates of home for the aged in Chimbel. The programmes were organized by the F X Memorial Trust, Merces, in association with Rotary Club of Panaji and Rotary Club of Panaji Riviera.
