Japan Marine United head vows good ships, low costs
Japan Marine United Corp. President Shinjiro Mishima said the new shipbuilder, born of a merger, will develop appealing ships and thoroughly cut costs to survive fierce competition.
"Now is the time that any company failing to make efforts will be shaken out," Mishima said at an inaugural ceremony of the company created Jan. 1.
The company was the result of a merger between Universal Shipbuilding Corp., which was owned by JFE Holdings Inc., Hitachi Zosen Corp., and IHI Marine United Inc., a subsidiary of IHI Corp.
In the shipbuilding industry, competition is intensifying with the rise of Chinese and South Korean players. Moreover, the global financial crisis after the 2008 collapse of U.S. investment bank Lehman Brothers caused a decline in shipbuilding demand, sending the industry into a slump worldwide.
