Asry pumps $3m into eco-friendly projects

Bahrain-based Arab Shipbuilding and Repair Yard (Asry) said it has committed more than $3 million to environmental considerations over the past two years.
These investments include a new sewage treatment plant, an oil sludge recycling modernisation programme and on-going corporate awareness campaigns and certifications, said chief executive Chris Potter.
'As one of the industrial leaders in the region, Asry has a responsibility to inspire and encourage environmental protection throughout the region,' explained Potter.
'Asry had recently celebrated the World Environment Day which was organised under the slogan Green Economy by handing out and distributing plants and nurslings, thereby educating the employees and workers on the importance of this branch of the economy.
'What sets Asry apart is its well established heritage and commitment to the environment which dates back more than 35 years, in other words since the initial dredging and backfilling works in the dry dock,' he said.
'The company has actively sustained this interest in the conservation and protection of the environment over the years,' said Potter.
'The year 2011 was marked by increased progress, especially in the field of waste recycling, which manifest in the several projects and initiatives that reassert the magnitude of the company's commitment to the protection of the environment,' he added.
Asry projects realisation manager Adel Butari said the company gives particular attention to the environmental impact of all new projects, and this increased vigilance has been galvanised by the chief executive.
He said that the company had started implementation of a project at the beginning of last year in order to keep pace with the increase in the quantity of the sanitary drainage water produced daily by the company, which stood at more than 1,000 cubic metres.
The purpose of the project is to align the environmental accreditation certificates of the dry dock with the highest international standards because it is the most active industrial complex in the area, which makes compliance with the best sustainable practices an integral part of the company's strategy.
'Considering the company's great desire to boost commitment to the national and international environmental conditions in the field of factory and company environment, Asry has invested in state-of-the-art technology in water treatment known as Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor,' he said.
'This is in addition to organic treatment of the sludge with bamboo beds, where the sludge is treated with circulation and sedimentation through biological layers in a process,' he said.
