Anwara set to become ideal industrial zone
The coastal area of Anwara upazila is set to become an ideal industrial zone for its geographical location and connectivity with two rivers and the Bay of Bengal.
Raipur union of the upazila and its periphery have been selected for a ship building zone of international standard while a vast tract of land at Rangadia and Majher Char mouzas has been acquired for a coal-fired mega power plant.
The areas of these two major infrastructure projects have been chosen by the government for their close connectivity facilities as the upazila stands concurrently on the coast of the Bay of Bengal and bank of Sangu and Karnafuli rivers, said an official in the Ministry of Industries.
Once these projects are implemented, the people of the region will see a major change in their lifestyle as hundreds of thousands of them will get employment and eventually Anwara will turn into a full-fledged sub-town.
Sources said some 2000 acres of lands in and around Raipur union of the upazila have been earmarked for the proposed global standard ship building industrial zone. Most of the lands of the area are government khas land while the rest will have to be acquired from the local individuals.
Prime Minister's Adviser for Economic Affairs Dr Mashiur Rahman visited the proposed area at Raipur union of Anwara along with the leading ship builders of the country on February 23, 2012.
Secretary to the government and chairman of Bangladesh Economic Zone Authority Mosharaf Hossain Bhuiyan and government officials concerned accompanied the adviser on the day.
After visiting the area the adviser told the media that as many as 10 ship building yards of six to seven major industries will be set up there which will bring immense fortune to the people of the region.
The ship builders will export 50 to 60 vessels to the foreigners annually and earn more than Tk 10 billion, apart from generating employment for about 0.1 million people, he said adding that there will be a major change in lifestyle with grown-up infrastructure and communication facilities including setting up of schools, colleges and hospitals.
Meanwhile, the work for setting up a coal-fired mega power plant at Anwara under foreign joint venture is in progress as the district administration of Chittagong has handed over 595 acres of land to the Power Development Board under the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources.
Foyez Ahmed, Deputy Commissioner of Chittagong, has said they handed over the acquired land to the project director (PD) of the power plant on July 5 this year at the instruction of the Land Ministry.
He told the FE that the district administration has acquired 595.36 acres of land at Majher Char and Rangadia areas at Anwara and handed it over to the PDB.
