Sinopacific Shipbuilding Group's Dayang Shipyard Replaces Acetylene with Natural Gas
marking another big step by this company in its efforts for energy conservation and environmental protection.
Previously, the company mostly used acetylene, which is a gas that is very dense and that produces more adhering slag and black smoke. There was a possibility of causing an explosion when the gas was used inside enclosed spaces, and the manual loading of the more than one thousand gas canisters used daily was a waste of time and effort. Accordingly, the company analyzed and compared industrial-use gases in terms of their environmental protection and safety factors, and decided to replace acetylene with natural gas.
The main component of natural gas is methane, and after being desulphurized and dried, it is more environmentally-friendly when burned. The density of natural gas is also lower than acetylene, and its explosion limit has a narrower range. The phenomenon of back fire does not occur when using natural gas and it is especially suitable for underwater cutting. Natural gas is also cheaper, so if all operations were switched to using natural gas, the company could save almost millions RMB a year.
