IMO funds training for shipbreaking workers in Bangladesh
The NGO Shipbreaking Platform has sent a letter to the Bangladeshi Prime Minister, calling on her to not accept a three million euro investment from the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) for the purpose of training shipbreaking workers in Bangladesh.
Shipbreaking Platform wants Bangladesh to only accept the fund when the IMO commits to also investing in infrastructural development on the yards, which they claim is crucial for real improvement in the industry.
Shipbreaking Platform believes that such an investment plan would only increase the dumping of hazardous end-of–life ships on Bangladesh's beaches, primarily by western, foreign owners, and legitimise current practises in the shipbreaking industry.
