Polish shipyard contemplating strategy change
Szczecin city council may take over the New Szczecin Shipyard (SSN) and then press for it to be incorporated into a special economic zone (SEZ). Last week, Szczecin councilors requested the Mayor to, "Begin proceedings aimed at taking over the real estate of the former New Szczecin Shipyard.”
The mayor is also to ask the Economy Ministry for the area to be encompassing in an SEZ.
This is a realistic possibility if the city makes the highest offer during the November tender to buy the assets of the shipyard.
Later, the local authority would have to find an investor who would commence business activities in the area to ensure that some level of employment is kept after the yard is closed.
The concept of involving the local government was suggested after the sale of SSN to Stichting Particulier Fonds Greenrights in September fell through.
