UASC's LNG-powered Barzan docks at Felixstowe - world's biggest?

UNITED Arab Shipping Company's (UASC) the 18,800-TEU Barzan, the first in a series of six vessels of this size being acquired by carrier for deployment on the Asia-Europe trade, has made its maiden call at Felixstowe.

UASC states the vessel's capacity as above 18,800 TEU, but in fact its nominal capacity of 19,870 TEU makes the Barzan the world's largest containership, says London's Loadstar.

"It is the first vessel to have a quoted length of 400 metres ?most other ultra-large container vessels (ULCVs) are a little shorter. It has a breadth of 58.68 metres and draught of 16 metres," said Loadstar.

The shipping line's latest newbuilding is deployed on its AEC1 service that plies the trade between Asia and North Europe, calling also at Qingdao, Shanghai, Ningbo, Shenzhen-Yantian, Port Kelang, Rotterdam and Hamburg.

The Barzan is part of the industry's first LNG-ready fleet and will set new standards for fuel and energy efficiency, due to optimised vessel design and an array of efficiency technologies.

UASC, along with other carriers, is suffering from severe overcapacity on the Europe-Far East trades. To help address this problem the company has implemented a structured blank sailing programme, effective from week 27 to week 38 for a total of 12 sailings, with its Ocean 3 alliance partners China Shipping Container Lines (CSCL) and CMA CGM, reported Dubai's Maritime Standard.

The AEC1, AEC4 and AEC9 services will remain unchanged, although the AEC2 will be modified to complement the revised AEC7 and AEC8 sailing schedule.

The AEC8 service will be blank during weeks 27, 29, 32, 35 and 37; and the AEC7 service will offer an alternative service during the blanked-out sailing weeks. AEC in turn will be blanked out on those weeks where the AEC8 is operational.
