Maersk still to call Houston despite APM Terminals' shutdown

OPERATIONS at the APM Terminals in Houston will shut down later this summer, but sister companies Maersk Line, SeaLand and Safmarine, will continue to call at the port, according to APMT spokesman Tom Boyd.

Mr Boyd said these services will use common user facilities, either at Barbours Cut or Bayport, which have deeper draft berths and newer cranes, reported American Shipper.

APM Terminals will continue to serve shippers moving cargo through the US Gulf at Mobile, Alabama, where it is to invest US$40 million to add two new super-postpanamax cranes and expand the container yard by 20 acres.

The port operator said it will seek to relocate its 26 employees in Houston to other terminals within its network.

APM Terminals Houston handled 379,000 TEU in 2014, equivalent to one-fifth of the port of Houston's total 1,951,088-TEU throughput for the year.

Commenting on the closure, Maersk Line spokesman Timothy Simpson emphasised that all Maersk services will continue to call the port of Houston, and that there will be no disruption to shippers.
