Port Canaveral debuts Gulftainer box terminal to rival Jacksonville
THE Port of Canaveral, 170 miles south of Jacksonville, has officially launched container terminal with the arrival of a CMA CGM ship at the Gulftainer facility.
While many see the opening of the new container terminal overall as a boon for the state, there is the question of how so many Florida ports seeking container traffic, including Tampa and Jacksonville can grow business while not competing with one another, says the Jacksonville Business Journal.
"There may be friendly competition, but there is plenty of cargo," said Florida Ports Council vice president Jennifer Krell Davis.
"About half the goods coming into Florida come into non-Florida ports. That's an immense amount of cargo. The opportunities are staggering," she said.
She went on to say that each port is adept at marketing itself to companies looking to bring in cargo, and ultimately it's up to the free market to decide the best fit for each port and company.
