France pays US$74.6 million for SNCF's holocaust role, railway denies guilt
FRANCE has agreed to pay in EUR60 million (US$74.6 million) in reparations for the role its state-owned railway, Societe nationale des chemins de fer (SNCF) played in taking Jews to the death camps in World War II.
The railway found that its US ambitions to bid on land for high-speed rail concessions, had been adversely affected by its denial of responsibility for transporting Jews to concentration camps between 1942 and 1944.
Each surviving deportee who now has US nationality can expect to receive US$100,000 from the fund to compensate Jewish prisoners of US nationality who were deported on SNCF trains, Lloyd's Loading List.
SNCF argues its trains were requisitioned by the German occupation forces, and that the railway's role was limited to driving trains to the border.
