German Amazon.com warehouse strike, but little disruption expected
AMAZON.COM workers at the big German warehouse at Bad Hersfeldof have gone on strike ahead of the busy Christmas season to secure wages the Verdi union has negotiated for retail workers, Reuters reports.
But Amazon has rejected the demand, saying warehouse staff are logistics workers and receive above-average pay by the standards of that industry.
The Verdi union said it expects 450 workers to join the strike on Monday.
Amazon said the vast majority of workers had not walked off the job and that its deliveries should not be disrupted because it can draw on its European network of 28 warehouses in seven countries.
The US company employs 10,000 warehouse staff at nine distribution centres in Germany, its second-biggest market behind the United States, plus more than 10,000 seasonal workers.
