Shanhaiguan Shipyard was founded in 1972, and put into production in 1980, when M/V "Bering Sea" from Hong Kong was successfully docked and repaired, which was the first foreign vessel repaired by the yard.

From then on, the repairing business of the yard has been booming, and its business covers over 30 countries .The annual repairing capability has been increased up to 120 vessels. In 1995, the living stock carrier "Alsades"from Saudi Arabian was repaired in the yard, which was a good example of large and complex repairing projects. Another remarkable work in that year was the repairing of M/V " New Explorer" from Hong Kong, a 384,000 DWT ULCC, which is the largest vessel repaired in China.
 
In 2003, a 332,000 DWT ore carrier, "Amy N", set another record of large dock-repaired vessels in China. Damaged repair is one of the outstanding features of the yard, many severe damaged vessels have been recovered in the yard, and of which are M/V "Maguan Sea" from China, M/V "Vanda Naree" from Thailand, M/V "Las Sierras" form Greece, and Chemical tanker "Alicudi M" from Korea. The shipyard is very strong at large steel renewal as its professional welding skill, high quality and timely delivery. In the list of big steel renewal are the vessels, 2,610 tons for M/V "Baotong Sea", and 1,850 tons for M/V"Mooning Light", and the owners were satisfied with the quality and delivery time.

As its excellent experiences in damaged repair and steel renewal, the world famous Sweden Ship Owner’s Association specially recommended Shanhaiguan Shipyard to ship owners in different countries. For the main and auxiliary engine repair, the shipyard successfully carried out overhaul or renewal of crankshaft, camshaft, generator set, and diesel engine, and solved the problems of severe vibration of generator sets many times. For the automation system repairing, the shipyard repaired damage or failure of auto gear system, fire alarm system, auto boiler control system, engine room monitoring and alarming system .
